ENRICH, Evaluating the Needs, Resources and Initiatives in the Communities of Houston in support of after-school, brings the local afterschool, or out-of-school time, community—including school districts, government organizations and nonprofit agencies—together with key stakeholders to discuss the needs of youth in relation to afterschool programs. The Project will examine how out-of-school time programs impact participants, families and communities. Project goals are to:
Supporters of the ENRICH project believe that strategic investments in out-of-school time programs promise significant community returns. Through the provision of safe and supportive afterschool programs, parents are able to retain steady employment by knowing their children are safe in a learning environment. Youth reduce participation in risky and criminal behaviors while engaging in structured learning opportunities that build on skills acquired during the regular school day.
With generous financial support from the Houston Endowment, Inc., ENRICH has conducted four major research projects on the Greater Houston out-of-school time community. ENRICH explored several topics including stakeholder perceptions of afterschool programming; juvenile delinquency in Houston as it relates to the availability of afterschool programs; a return on investment study of local out-of-school time programs; and identification of the best practices of Houston based afterschool programs.
